Grinding wheel grit size is one of the most decisive parameters in any grinding operation. It directly affects material removal efficiency, the grinding texture (surface pattern left on the workpiece), surface roughness, and the working state of the wheel face. Choosing the correct abrasive grain size is therefore essential for achieving both productive material removal and reliable surface quality.
Rough grinding mainly focuses on material removal efficiency and chip clearance capability. Coarser grains open up more space between cutting edges, allowing grinding chips to be discharged smoothly and preventing the wheel from loading or clogging under heavy stock removal.
Finish grinding, by contrast, focuses on dimensional accuracy and surface quality. Finer grains generate shallower cuts, which produce a smoother surface finish and better size control on the finished workpiece.
The correct grit size cannot be determined simply from the words "rough grinding" or "finish grinding". The final choice must also take into account the workpiece material, the grinding allowance, and the surface requirements. Two operations both described as "rough grinding" may require completely different grit sizes depending on the material hardness and the amount of stock to be removed.

If the workpiece has a large grinding allowance but a fine grit wheel is used directly, the wheel may struggle to clear chips in some working conditions, leading to chip discharge difficulties, wheel loading or clogging, and a noticeable drop in efficiency. In severe cases, the loaded wheel generates excessive heat, which can burn the workpiece surface and shorten wheel life.
The right strategy is to match the grit size to the actual stock removal stage: start with a coarser grit to remove the bulk of the allowance efficiently, then switch to finer grits for semi-finishing and finishing to achieve the required dimensional accuracy and surface roughness.
Grinding wheel grit size selection is a balance between material removal efficiency and surface quality. Finer is not always better, and coarser is not always more productive. By confirming the grinding allowance, the process stage, chipping limits, surface roughness targets and downstream finishing steps, you can select the optimal grit size for stable, efficient and cost-effective grinding.
